It’s For Rent!

The Yellow House!

A 1915 Bungalow with a mysterious history of ownership – there are rumors of immigrants, Black Panthers and blacklisted attorneys. Dubbed the “yellow house” because of its sunny exterior, the cottage adds a youthful brightness to an already charming Westerly neighborhood of Baltimore. It sits on the edge of Leakin Park and the Gwynns Falls Trail, overseeing streams, 18th century mill ruins, and miles of forests.

It’s for rent at $1300 / month! (reduced $300!)

It’s 1915 and you just read an advertisement for a brand new development northwest of the city in the county. It sounds perfect and natural and reads that it is “restricted against rows of brick buildings, saloons, and all nuisances.” Imagine jumping on the #4 streetcar downtown. You’d ride out of the city, down Fremont and Edmonson Avenues just a few miles until you’re really in the sticks. The heavy forest and rolling hills of Northwest Baltimore greet you as you arrive in a beautiful park-like neighborhood. You’d hope off the trolley and walk up Clifton Avenue, down onto Prospect Circle where you find a quaint and lovely little shingle sided home. Walking up on the front porch, past the blooming hydrangeas, you realize it overlooks the great Gwynns Falls river valley – a view preserved to this day.

Flash forward nearly 100 years and you won’t find much different on this small street. While the city has since expanded to encircle the Windsor Hills neighborhood, this tucked away gem still conjures up images of grazing sheep, trolley cars, and Model T’s. The house is again for sale and every bit as magical as in 1915.

The house interior has changed over the years. A kitchen here, a bathroom there, but altogether, the house stays very true to it’s roots with a columned entry way, elegant inlayed hardwood floors, high ceilings, full walk-in pantry in the kitchen, and original tall windows. Some more recent additions include a freestanding Ikea kitchen, wood stove in the living room, and a new 40 year roof.

Outside, you will enjoy a good size yard, with raised beds for gardening, wooden retainer walls, and original stone dividing fences. Large and healthy old growth tress dot the property as well.

This house is a gem and a great place to retreat. Great for a UMBC/JHU/Coppin State/UMD commuting student, city-minded person working in Ellicott City or Columbia, or someone who likes that balance between forest and city.
